SUPREME COURT&RIGHTS OF PRISONERS.

A prisoner enjoys all rights guaranteed to citizens under Part III of the Constitution. He is deprived of his personal liberty due to his conviction. The rights available to a prisoner include Art. 14, 19, 20 and 21.

Provisions in the CRPC provide for disclosure of grounds of arrest; right to be produced before a magistrate; right to medical examination; right to fair and speedy trial.

The Evidence act provides that the accused is presumed innocent till proved guilty. He cannot be tortured during interrogation.

Provisions in the IPC –sections 330 and 331- relate to causing of hurt and wrongful confinement.

The Police manual; Prison manual spell out the obligations of the authorities towards prisoners.
